oil painting

oil on canvas portrait of Lilian Lindsay. Painted by Kathleen Williams in 1959.

Lilian Lindsay (1871 - 1960) was the first qualified woman dentist, gaining the LDS in 1895 in Edinburgh after being refused entry to the London schools because she was a woman. She practised until 1920 when her husband Robert became the Dental Secretary of the BDA. As the Hon. Librarian of the BDA, she established the Library and the Museum. She was also sub-editor of The British Dental Journal, winner of the Tomes Prize, the Colyer Gold Medal, and recipient of several honorary degrees. She became the President of the BDA in 1946. This portrait shows Lilian Lindsay in her beloved library at the BDA`s Hill Street premises. This portrait is the one which Lilian Lindsay chose to be displayed during her time at the BDA.
